Ministry of Environment
The Ministry of Environment is the administrative body for the Minister of Environment.
Civil servants manage several areas of responsibility each and communicate with agencies regarding these. In addition, civil servants and advisers carry out oversight of the agencies, although the financial officer is responsible for financial supervision of the agencies.
The financial officer administers §18 of the national budget.
The administrative unit manages the registry and accounting within the ministry itself, as well as the accounting for boards, councils, and similar bodies under §18. The administrative unit is also responsible for proofreading and general office tasks.
The Minister of Environment is responsible for labor market affairs, occupational health and safety, fire safety, housing affairs, construction affairs, electricity supply, diving affairs, mapping and surveying authority, land-use planning, cadastral registration and subdivision, nature affairs, energy affairs, forestry, subdivision, land registration, environmental affairs, land consolidation, accident insurance, and climate affairs.
The Minister of Environment holds the government’s authority over Bústaðir (the Housing Loan Fund).
The Minister of Environment has overall supervision of the following agencies and is authorized to issue administrative directives to them:
- The Labour and Fire Inspection Authority (except concerning coordination in emergency preparedness matters).
- The Environment Agency, but only with respect to those areas of responsibility that fall under the Minister of Environment.
The Ministry of Environment, is responsible for the enviroment in the Faroe Islands.
The Ministry cooperates with other ministries and agencies besides Nordic institutions.
