Cultural and natural heritage
Cultural and natural heritage are significant to a nation’s knowledge, values and well-being. Heritage is a cornerstone in defining ourselves as a nation in relation to the past, the future and the world around us.
Cultural and natural heritage comprise e.g. ancient monuments and buildings, language, objects, books, arts, crafts, folk culture, landscape, stones, plants and animals. Heritage is what we preserve as a nation and what we transfer to our descendants.
The ministry of culture has the overall responsibility of the museums, archives and libraries.
Søvn Landsins is the overall national institution that encompasses the museums, libraries and archives. Søvn Landsins is in charge of the registration, preservation, research and communication of our cultural and natural heritage.
