The purpose of the environmental legislation is to protect the environment from human contamination both on land and at sea. An arrangement with environmental sanctions of companies that particularly pollute is to make sure that the pollution is not more extensive than what society can accept.

The administration of environmental issues is divided between the Environment Agency and the municipalities.

Climate issues and climate politics are also a part of this jurisdiction. The political agreement is that the Faroese emssion of climate gas pollution is to be cut with at least 20% in 2020 compared to the emission in 2005. The Environment Agency makes an account of the Farose emission every year.
