Undersea tunnel in the Faroes opens

On 29 April 2006, the second undersea tunnel of the Faroes, Norðoyartunnilin, which joins Borðoy with Eysturoy, opened.

The Prime Minister of the Faroes emphasises that that day represents a link in a chain of development, which began early in the 1960s when the first tunnel of the Faroes opened.

“Since then we have created many tunnels, built bridges and dams, and now we also build tunnels that go underneath bays and straits,” the Prime Minister says.

Two other undersea tunnels are being planned in the Faroes – one that joins Sandoy with southern Streymoy, and one that joins Eysturoy with Streymoy.
