The Sandoy Tunnel is now open

The Sandoy Tunnel is now open

Today marks a significant milestone in the Faroe Islands as the Sandoy Tunnel is now open, connecting the islands of Streymoy and Sandoy. This monumental achievement provides improved connectivity to over 90% of the population.

At 10.8 kilometres, the Sandoy Tunnel proudly holds the title of the longest subsea tunnel in the Faroe Islands and one of the longest in the world.

Beyond its remarkable engineering, the tunnel hails a new era of possibilities and opportunities for both the local residents of Sandoy and for the entire Faroe Islands.

Speaking at this afternoon's opening ceremony, Prime Minister Johannesen emphasized the tunnel's importance, stating:

"We eagerly anticipate the new opportunities and progress the tunnel will bring for the people of Sandoy across all ages and sectors, in both business and recreation, indeed for all Faroese people collectively. The tunnel offers the best of both worlds. Access to the vibrancy of city life and the tranquillity of small village communities.

Congratulations to all Faroese on this momentous milestone!
