On his visit to Brussels last week the Faroese Minister of Education and Research, Mr Jógvan á Lakjuni, has been to meetings with DG Research and DG Education.

The purpose of the minister’s visit was to encourage membership in the 7th Framework Programme and to be part of EU’s Life Long Learning Programme.

The Faroese Minister stressed how very important it is for the Faroe Islands to be able to participate in the European co-operation in the fields of education and research.

The EU Commission was principally positive towards the Faroese requests and the parties agreed upon working closely to find a solution.

The Minister’s meetings with EU authorities were a follow up on the Faroese Prime Minister, Mr Jóannes Eidesgaard’s, visit earlier this year to Brussels. The Prime Ministers main aim was to push for closer ties between the EU and the Faroe Islands.

Education and research are going to be part of the agenda in the forthcoming Joint Committee Meeting which is held in Brussels in December.

The Faroese Minister of Education and Research emphasized the importance of the Faroe Islands not to being isolated in the continuing European integration and co-operation in the fields of education and research.

As well as having meetings with the EU the Faroese Minister of Education and Research visited the Icelandic EU Embassy. There he was informed on the Icelandic experience in its Membership in the EU Framework Programmes on Research and Education.
