The Faroes Takes Precautions Against the Spread of Bird Flu

"Given the present spread of bird flu among wild birds in Europe, it would come as no surprise if bird flu were transferred to the Faroes by migratory birds from Western Europe some time in the spring", says Bjørn Harlou, Chief Veterinary Officer.

The Faroes has the same enabling legislation in this area as the EU, and the various regulations and directives in place have ensured that the Faroes is well prepared to monitor and control the spread of avian flu.

The Food, Veterinary and Environmental Agency has implemented comprehensive bird flu information campaigns. One aspect of this effort is a new homepage - www.hfs.fo - dedicated to avian flu that provides detailed information about the disease, and clearly explains the signs people should look for.
