The Faroe Islands and Turkey sign Free Trade Agreement

16 December 2014

Faroese Prime Minister, Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen and Turkish Minister of Economy, Nihat Zeybekçi have today signed a Free Trade Agreement in Ankara.

Prime Minister Johannesen welcomed the agreement as an important step forward in Faroese foreign trade policy. “Turkey is a significant market – and a growing one for both salmon and pelagic fish, which are the main exports from the Faroe Islands. The agreement provides the Faroe Islands with duty-free access for our most important products. We can now compete on equal terms on the Turkish marketwith other seafood exporting countries such as Iceland, Norway and Scotland.”

The process to conclude an agreement between the Faroe Islands and Turkey has taken 15 years, although real progress was not achieved until September this year, when the parties finalised the details of the agreement that has now been signed.
