Prime Minister in Norway for EFTA meetings

As part of the preparatory work to apply for EFTA membership, Prime Minister Jóannes Eidesgaard journeyed to Norway to conduct talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Secretary of State Jonas Gahr Støre.

The purpose of the meeting in Oslo was to explain to the Norwegians the Faroese wish to become a member of EFTA. Prime Minister Eidesgaard pointed out that the Faroes was orignally associated with EFTA along with Denmark, but had to resign its membership when Denmark joined the EU in 1973. Prime Minister Eidesgaard also elaborated on the Faroese Government's two-pronged European strategy, the aim of which is to enhance co-operation with the EU while at the same time seeking membership in EFTA.

The Norwegian government leaders stated they understood the Faroese desire to join EFTA and agreed to discuss the issue with the other EFTA countries.
