Census - a basis for future statistics

It has been almost 30 years since the last census was conducted in the Faroes. As a consequence, a great amount of statistical information is missing – information that should form the basis for, e.g., political decisions on how the Faroese community should be ordered.

Given this reality, the Government of the Faroes has worked for a long time on a proposal to establish electronic statistical registries, where certain information about the citizenry is continuously updated, including demographic and social circumstances, residence, work and education situation.

The foundation for a new statistics system is a census. “We intend to conduct a census, because, in order to establish electronic statistical registries, it is necessary to have updated information from a census as a beginning point for the registries”, explains Hans Pauli Strøm, Minister of Social and Health Affairs. A project group, with representatives from the various ministries, relevant government agencies and the municipalities will be appointed and shall draft a recommendation on how a census in the Faroes shall be carried out.
