Canadian-Nordic Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Canadian-Nordic Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Høgni Hoydal, Faroese Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with his Nordic and Canadian colleagues in Iqaluit yesterday during the 1st ever Canada-Nordic Strategic Dialogue. Foreign ministers from Canada, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark, along with representatives from Iceland, Finland, and Greenland, were present.

The meeting emphasised the need for strategic cooperation between Canada and the Nordics to ensure security and stability in the North, focusing on critical infrastructure, digitalisation, and cybersecurity. It also highlighted the importance of accelerating the green energy transition.

Høgni Hoydal, emphasised that the Faroe Islands, based on the national security policy adopted by Parliament this spring, are committed to actively participating in international initiatives that promote security and stability.

It is the peoples and nations of the North Atlantic and the Arctic who must decide how security policy should be implemented – also in the interest of civil safety. Therefore, it is important that the Nordic countries and Canada together discuss how to address the challenges that lie ahead," the minister says.

During the visit, meetings were held with Nunavut Premier PJ Akeeagok, the Canadian military, and an organisation advocating for Indigenous rights in the region.
