Bjarni Kárason Petersen appointed Faroese Minister for Nordic Cooperation

Justice Minister in the newly formed Faroese Government, Bjarni Kárason Petersen, has also been appointed Minster for Nordic Cooperation, in addition to being responsible for International Development Cooperation.

“Our common history, culture and language give the Nordic countries the best possible basis for working together on joint solutions. We have the unique opportunity to cultivate both what makes us different and what unites us”, says Minister Petersen.

The Faroe Islands and Nordic Cooperation

The Faroe Islands has an active role in the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers as a self-governing nation with independent representation. For decades, various Faroese governments have insisted on a full and independent member of the Nordic Council.

Nordic and North Atlantic cooperation is an area of high priority for the Faroe Islands. As a Nordic nation, it is essential for the Faroe Islands to play an active part in the ongoing processes to enhance cooperation across the Nordic region, with a particular emphasis on the West Nordic area and building stronger partnerships with all our neighbouring countries across the North Atlantic. The Faroe Islands has an active role in the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers as a self-governing nation with independent representation.

From the Liberal Party

Bjarni Kárason Petersen represents the Liberal Party (Framsókn) in the new Government Coalition. He was first elected to the Løgting, the Faroese Parliament, in 2019. As Minister for Nordic Cooperation, he succeeded Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen from the Unionist Party (Sambandsflokkurin), who was minister from 2019 – 2022.
