EU recognition of adequacy of personal data protection in the Faroe Islands

The European Commission has recognized the Faroe Islands as providing adequate protection of personal data in accordance with Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.

The effect of this decision is that personal data can flow from the 28 EU countries and Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland to the Faroe Islands without any further safeguard being necessary. Such an adequacy decision does not cover data exchanges in the law enforcement sector.
